The Costa del Sol is named for its sun, but it could just as easily be named for its beaches. From Marbella to Nerja, the shoreline changes character every few kilometres: wide urban sands, protected dunes, rocky coves accessible only by boat, and hidden calas where the water stays clear until late afternoon. For villa guests with a car, a skipper, or simply a willingness to explore, the best stretches are rarely the most famous.
Playa de Artola and Cabopino
East of Marbella, the coast becomes quieter. Cabopino’s small marina gives way to a protected dune system and one of the region’s most beautiful beaches. Playa de Artola is a wide ribbon of fine sand backed by low dunes and native vegetation. The water is calm, the atmosphere is family-friendly, and the chiringuitos serve grilled sardines and cold beer without pretension.
It is also one of the easiest beaches to reach from the Golden Mile or Puerto Banús — a twenty-minute drive along the coastal road, with parking close to the sand during most of the year.
The Coves of Maro-Cerro Gordo
Further east, near Nerja, the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park protects a dramatic coastline of cliffs, caves and crystalline water. The beaches here are smaller, reached by footpaths that descend from the clifftop road. Cala de Maro and Cala del Cañuelo are the best known; arrive before ten in July and August to secure a spot and enjoy the water at its stillest.
For guests staying in a villa with yacht access, the Maro coves are even better approached from the sea. A morning anchored off the cliffs, swimming into a cave, and lunch on board is among the most memorable days the coast can offer.
Puerto Banús to Estepona
West of Marbella, the beaches become broader and less crowded. Playa del Cristo in Estepona is a sheltered bay popular with locals and families, with shallow water and a relaxed row of restaurants along the sand. Further west, the beaches of Guadalmina and San Pedro mix residential calm with easy access to bars and tennis clubs.
A Note on Yachts and Access

By road, early mornings avoid traffic and parking limits.
