Most guides to the Costa del Sol are written for July. December is a different proposition, and it is worth being honest about what it delivers.

What December Actually Feels Like on the Costa del Sol

Daytime highs on the coast in December commonly sit around 16–18C. That is terrace weather — a coffee in the sun at eleven, a walk on the beach in a jumper — not beach weather. The sea is cold, the sand is largely empty, and most summer chiringuitos are shut. What you get instead is light and space: the coast enjoys roughly 320 days of sunshine a year, and many December days are clear from morning to dusk.

Evenings are cooler than people expect away from the shoreline, so heating and sheltered outdoor space matter more than in August. Look for covered rather than open terraces; winter here is a month for the middle of the day.

Why the Coast Stays Milder Than Inland Andalusia

The mildness is geography, not marketing. The Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra Blanca shelter the shoreline from the cold continental air that pushes down through Andalusia in winter. Inland towns sit higher and run several degrees colder: Ronda, Antequera and Granada all see frost, and the Sierra Nevada carries snow while Marbella is mild enough for lunch outside.

That makes the coast the sensible base rather than a mountain village, and it shapes day trips: inland in the morning, back to a milder evening.

Which Areas Suit a Winter Stay

Across our portfolio of 171 published villas in 40 areas, the winter geography is simple: the closer to the sea, the gentler the temperatures.

• Marbella (11 villas) — the obvious base: a working town, so restaurants, cafés and shops stay open, and the old town is pleasant without the summer crowds.
• Estepona (13 villas) — the mildest stretch of the coast, with a broad promenade made for winter walking and a town centre that keeps its own rhythm.
• Benahavís (9 villas) — inland and elevated, cooler at night, but quiet and private; good for a group happy to drive to dinner.
• Nueva Andalucía (40 villas) — between Marbella and Puerto Banús, close to golf and the coast road, good for lunches out and evenings in.
• The Golden Mile (26 villas) — between Marbella town and Puerto Banús, with the densest concentration of restaurants and services.

La Zagaleta and El Madroñal (4 villas each) offer gated privacy for a longer drive, while Puerto Banús (10), San Pedro de Alcántara (4), El Paraíso (4) and Guadalmina Alta (4) suit a stay close to the water.

Heated Pools and the Question You Must Ask

This is the most common disappointment among winter guests, and it is easily avoided: ask explicitly whether the pool is heated, and whether heating is included or charged separately. Many villas have heated pools and many do not — a pool blissful in August is cold in December without a heat pump. Ask what temperature it reaches in winter, and confirm it will be heated for your dates.

If not, that is workable: some of the best winter weeks are built around a covered terrace, an outdoor kitchen and a hot tub.

Christmas and New Year Logistics

Christmas and New Year are the two weeks of winter that behave like high season and need planning.

Restaurants in Marbella, Puerto Banús and Estepona book out weeks ahead for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, and a number close on 25 December and 1 January — confirm before relying on a table. New Year's Eve fills fastest; if that evening matters, arrange it first.

For food, supermarkets generally close on 25 December and 1 January with shorter hours on the eves, so shop properly on 23 December. Local markets keep their weekday schedules and are better for fresh produce and fish.

Check-in is from 16:00 and check-out by 11:00, which matters for a Christmas Day arrival, and Málaga airport is 40–50 minutes from the Marbella area. A deposit of around 30% holds the booking, with the balance due about 30 days before arrival. Quieter Roads, Easier Tables

The practical luxury of December is the absence of other people. The A-7 and AP-7, which crawl in August, move freely; the drive from Marbella to Estepona takes the time the map says it will, and parking in Puerto Banús is achievable. Restaurants that need booking three weeks out in summer seat you on the day, and the ones open through winter tend to be the ones locals use. Beaches are near-empty and the coastal paths are at their best.

Winter Pricing Versus Summer

Villa rates across the portfolio run from €4,900 to €130,000 per week, and winter sits at the lower end. The three collections are priced from €4,900 (Essential), €10,000 (Signature) and €25,000 (Iconic) per week, and outside New Year a December booking is materially cheaper than the same property in August. New Year is the exception: prices climb close to summer levels and it books earlier than anything else. The first half of December and the weeks after New Year are the best value of the year — ask for a like-for-like quote for your exact dates.

What a Winter Villa Week Is Actually For

A winter villa week is not a beach holiday, and it is better for it. It is a base for walking the coastal paths and the Sierra Blanca foothills, for golf without a 6am tee time, for lunches that last two hours, and for day trips that would be madness in August — Ronda, Granada, the white villages. It is a way to gather a family in one house for Christmas rather than a restaurant table for twelve, with space for everyone to retreat to.

It also suits a different traveller: the one who wants to work a few mornings from a quiet house with good Wi-Fi, or to spend a fortnight between Christmas and mid-January with no fixed plan. The coast in December is mild, not hot — and that is the point.
